My Story

Picture
My name is Stuart. I'm an outdoor and adventure travel journalist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm constantly falling on my own face, both metaphorically and literally - but at least I usually get to do so in front of a scenic backdrop. I attended the University of Stirling, where I was nominated for the NUS Student Journalist of the Year award. After years spent building and working at Mpora.com, now the largest action sports and adventure magazine in the world, I've moved on to write guides, features, news and SEO articles about current affairs and culture, as well as travel. Most of my work at the moment involves writing about sustainable tourism, rewilding, mountain
biking, skiing, hiking, football, or some other kind of outdoor pursuit. But I'm also well versed in writing about an endless variation of topics, from scribbling about trains and parks for The Guardian to writing about Lidl kayaks, professional woodchopping and everything in between.

I'm currently the editor of the Much Better Adventures magazine, and write for The Guardian, Independent, Metro, Vice Media, Red Bull, Mpora, Escapism Magazine, PlayStation Magazine, Mundial Magazine and more. I have extensive experience in feature writing, interviewing, writing for SEO purposes and social media practise.

As well as my work as an adventure journalist, I'm also a performance poet, playwright and creative writer. Sometimes I even combine being on stage with the adventure travel stuff, like at the Adventure Travel Show this year, where I led a chat with G-Adventures. I co-wrote the play Lifeguards for the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe with Grant Robertson, and my first spoken word show, The Space Gecko Project debuted at Hidden Door Festival 2018, before enjoying a successful and acclaimed run at the Edinburgh fringe.
The Skinny described The Space Gecko Project as "the most wholesome event for Scottish poetry in 2018" and the Sunday Post called it "wonderfully weird". I've also done feature sets with Sonnet Youth, Inky Fingers, Loud Poets, Interrobang and more, and performed across Scotland, England and in Berlin and Paris. My surreal short stories have also been published in 404 Ink Literary Magazine, Speculative Books and more, and I'm always open to new performing, speaking and writing opportunities in any walk of life.
